Mixed Metal Jewelry: Wearing Gold and Silver Together

Mixed Metal Jewelry: Wearing Gold and Silver Together

Wearing mixed metals has become one of the biggest jewelry trends.

Instead of the traditional advice that you should choose between either gold or silver, now it's all about embracing the freedom to mix both. That might mean adding pieces to your collection that have both metals in the design itself, or by intentionally creating stacks and combinations of silver and gold pieces on your own. One of the best things about accessorizing is expressing your personal style and being creative, and this is one of the easiest ways to do it.

While there are no rules when it comes to mixing gold and silver jewelry, here are three tips if you're not sure where to start.

1. Keep Consistent Form or Size

When wearing mixed metals, it can help to create a cohesive look by keeping the style or size of your jewelry consistent. Stacking rings or layering necklaces with similar shapes or sizes helps tie the look together, especially when combining gold and silver. Mixing chunky with delicate becomes tricky and can throw off the balance.

2. Start with a Mixed Metal Piece

The easiest way to start wearing mixed metals is to choose one piece that already combines both gold and silver in the design. From there, you can add other jewelry in either metal, using that piece to create a balanced and intentional look.

3. Use a 70/30 mix

Opt for a choice metal and go heavier on it. For example, wear 70% gold and a 30% silver mix. It's helps create balance over choosing an exact 50/50 split.

The truth is, there are no rules.

There are plenty of opinions about which jewelry tones complement each other or what metals should be worn together, but feel free to ignore it all. The most important part of personal style is finding jewelry that makes you feel confident. If you love the look of mixed metal jewelry, don't be afraid to experiment.

Check out some of my favorite pieces to style a mixed metals look:

  1. Stack a gold + silver Ribbon Ring together
  2. Interlace two Lia Rings in silver + gold
  3. Pair the Petal necklace in gold with the Liquid Water Droplet necklace in silver
  4. Stack a pair of mixed metal Ribbon Bracelets or Peak Chevron Bracelets
