Proportions: Getting It Right With Your Jewelry

Proportions: Getting It Right With Your Jewelry

One of the things I hear often from people is “I wish I could wear more rings like you do, but I don’t know how to combine them.”

I also hear: “I want to stack necklaces but I’m not sure how to do it.”

Answers to both of these questions, in the simplest terms, is by learning about proportions

As someone who spent a lot of time in the architecture realm before designing jewelry, I learned early on in that practice that proportion is KEY to making a space or place work well.

The same sort of ideas can be applied in jewelry, which seems unrelated, but I promise you there are some parallels.

Proportions are essential for creating visually harmony. In architecture it provides a sense of balance. In fashion, proportions influence how a piece complements the wearer and how different elements interact with one another.

Here’s my guide to pairing different proportions in the jewelry that you wear:

1. Balance Statement and Minimal Pieces

Pair bold and delicate elements to create contrast and visual interest. For example:

- A large statement necklace pairs well with smaller earrings to keep the focus on one area.

- Chunky rings can be balanced with several thinner, stacked rings for a look that feels just right. Instead, if you wore your biggest statement ring adjacent to a tiny, delicate band, it may feel out of proportion.

2. Layer Different Sizes for Depth

Create a rich, dimensional look:

- Layering thinner necklace chains with a single bold pendant draws the eye to a focal point without overwhelming.

- Combining bracelets of different thicknesses, such as a bangle with an intricate chain, adds texture.

3. Mix Shapes and Sizes Thoughtfully

Combining different proportions is not just about scale but also shape:

- A mix of geometric and organic shapes can create an interesting contrast (e.g., a bold square-shape alongside a piece that's more delicate or rounded).

- Pairing longer, drop earrings with a choker balances vertical and horizontal proportions.

4. Consider Your Features

The proportions of jewelry should also complement *your* body and face shape. Don't let jewelry overwhelm you! Usually you can feel it if something is just off. Go with your instincts.

You can create lots of stunning, well-balanced looks with your jewelry. Don't be afraid to flat lay everything out on a tabletop to look at combinations before you put them on. The key is to just experiment with different sizes, shapes, and layers while keeping overall harmony in mind.
