I’ll preface this post by sharing the reason I wrote it:
I read an article recently about how to “grow up” when it comes to your jewelry collection. It was a bit off-putting, to be honest, because it implied that certain types of jewelry are childish, or that women of a certain age should have “graduated” to wearing certain things, while others become off limits.
If you wade into this sort of topic online… it can be A LOT to digest. “Should Women Over 30 Wear Shorts?” — those type of cringe-worthy headlines are common. But it made me wonder what I'd say in terms of jewelry, how to wear it, etc
So, while I hesitate to enter this territory with a listicle about how need solid gold hoops or solitaire diamond studs for your jewelry box (the last thing I wish to do is dictate what you should wear), I do want to answer a common question that I get: "Where should I start if I want to build a jewelry collection?"

My answer is this: there are certain pieces that you can start with for building or solidifying your collection.
So if you’ve ever looked in your jewelry box and thought “I need to start over” … or you have lots of pieces that you just don’t wear anymore, then this article is for you.
This is my recommendation for how to build a collection you’ll love and wear:
1. Start with a hoop earring
Why: you’ll reach for this when you don’t know what to wear. It works equally well for work functions, date nights, school drop off runs, and everything in between. Ideally it's a hoop that's comfortable enough for you to wear to a fitness class or while traveling. It doesn't even matter what metal or size you go with, that's up to you!
2. Own a bracelet that you can stack
Why: it classes up any outfit. It pairs with your watch, if you wear one, or you can wear it solo too. A bangle with some weight to it, if you like bigger pieces, or a small chain for those that prefer daintier items — both are perfect for everyday wear. To me, a bracelet indicates that you thought about your look and layered on something a little extra.
3. Add an everyday necklace
Why: a necklace you never want to take off is a statement of it's own. It could be an initial, a shape you love, a birthstone, or a souvenir from somewhere you've travelled. But it should be YOU, and symbolize who you are. Think of the people in your life and their jewelry, do you know anyone that has a signature pendant that they always wear, almost like it becomes part of their identity? It's the easiest way to show your true self and express who you are. Necklaces are often sentimental (worn close to the heart) and can show your personality.
4. Find a pair of versatile stud earrings
Why: Studs are functional. They're easy to wear, and you can usually sleep in them. They keep your piercings from closing up, and are just a basic must-have. Finding a pair that you love makes your life simpler. Done and done!
5. Have fun with some Drop/Statement earrings
Why: a larger earring that makes a statement, something timeless that you can wear forever, because why not?. Maybe it's a dangle or drop earring. Think something that would work for special events, nights out, or a wedding guest look. These can be a chance to express yourself and your style, so have fun.

If you're still not sure where to start, here are some Love Lori Michelle pieces that fit the list:
- The Perfect Hoops or the Aura Hoops are both safe bets that work with everything
- You can find the entire Bracelet Collection here, but my recommendations are the Ribbon or the Revolve bangles
- Necklace choices are deeply personal, but my picks are: this for Heart lovers, this for something edgy, a minimal and elegant choice, something for finding balance...
- So many stud choices! Have a look here
- Make a statement: Modern + Geometric or Floral or Plant Lover or Bohemian
Love,
Lori
