Tips for Gifting Jewelry When You're Not Sure Where to Start

Gifting jewelry can be intimidating. It's an intimate, sentimental item to select for a loved one, friend, family member, or partner. It's something they will wear close to their body.

Jewelry is symbolic. It can set a mood, send a message, and carry an important meaning... and you want to get it right.

When it comes to selecting jewelry for a gift, here are some tips to help you:

1. Earrings are the easiest to gift.

Choose them for friends, family, or your partner.

As long as you know your recipient has pierced ears, you can't go wrong with new earrings. Earrings can show appreciation, celebration, or love, they are a versatile piece of jewelry that's suitable for all ages, and everyone loves a new accessory.

Stud earrings are always a hit, because they are a staple. Hoops are a classic you can't go wrong with either. If you want to go a step farther, choose something more specific to your recipient's taste. For example, if they love the outdoors, choose something that recognizes that, like these nature-inspired earrings. If they're more artsy, choose something like these or these with some flair. Trendsetter best friend? Try a statement pair of earrings.

2. Necklaces are a good choice for something more intimate and meaningful.

A necklace can show romantic love and commitment, but they can also be gifted for symbolizing success or aspirations. Since it's worn close to the heart, against the neck, a necklace is often more sentimental than earrings.

Think about what the pendant might mean to the recipient and what words you might say to them as they open the gift. Are you proud of them for finding their way recently? Are they a source of light in your life? Are they fierce and cutting edge? Do you love them?

3. Consider the recipient's style

Do they like statement or understated pieces? Do they usually wear silver or gold? Think about these factors as you search for the perfect piece. If you're not sure, it's ok. Remember that sometimes the best gifts are true surprises that the recipient might not necessarily pick out for themselves, but they will love it simply because it's from you.

4. Gifting Rings Isn't That Hard to Do

Many people want to gift rings, but they are worried about the sizing. This is a great opportunity to shop together for a gift, or to let the recipient pick out something they like. One of the best gifts to give is an "IOU" with specific recommendations in mind, like "I'd love to help you pick out a chunky sterling silver ring" and then enjoy perusing for the right piece together. People love being included in a shared activity that ends with a gift. This way, you can also determine their size before purchasing.

Or, you can simply go for it! The average ring size for women is 6. If you recipient is petite, choose a size 4.5 ring. If they are above average height and build, start with a 7 and know that you an always get it exchanged or adjusted in either case. Most reputable jewelers want you to end up with the perfect piece, so if an adjustment or exchange is necessary, it'll be easy to do.
